From Gary: Passover: The Love Story

Most Jewish people are familiar with the basic story of Passover and the Exodus. The Jews spent generations as slaves in Egypt, eventually to be led out by Moses. They lived in the desert for 40 years before finally settling in Eretz Yisrael. Passover, or Pesach, commemorates the Hebrews? quick departure from Egypt.

But it's the hidden story behind Passover that inspired Gary Rosenthal's newest piece - the Wedding Seder Plate - fusing a story of love with one of survival.

During their time in Egypt, life was tough. The idea of having children and bringing them into such a life was disheartening. The Jewish men were focused on survival. Exhausted after working all day as slaves, they had little energy left for their wives, let alone the possibility of having children. So the women polished copper into beautiful mirrors and artisitc ornaments, which they wore to entice their husbands - and it worked!

The Torah tells us to be "fruitful and multiply," and there is great merit in having children against all odds. Moses honored the women by having their copper items used in making the original Mishkan - the portable, collapsible Temple that moved with the Jews from place to place in the desert following the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Some say the women?s creativity and determination saved the Jews? future?
